SVC Valiants and XU Crusaders Renewing Friendship Ties after 51 Years

51 years ago, stood what was once a 49 year-old St. Vincent’s College, a school we all know to be a school of Catholic doctrine, a school of morals, a school beside the Cathedral church, but more importantly, a school we all know to be our Alma Mater. It was within that 49 years that SVC had a friendly basketball match with Xavier University of Cagayan de Oro City, two Catholic schools built by the sweat and hard work of Jesuit priests, schools who share the same principles and values join hand-in-hand in a friendly and non-competitive game as an embodiment of the friendship, sportsmanship and love the two schools share as sisters in Christ.

Now, generations after theirs, from 1966 up to last September 2, 2017, 51 years after the friendly match, Xavier University and St. Vincent’s College Incorporated has yet again showcased their friendship as they play another game together as sisters. Making this event more memorable is that this friendly match was played on SVC grounds on her 100th year. Now, after the said match, even after half a century of unhindered friendship, SVC continues to share the same friendship and love with Xavier University, following in the footsteps of their Jesuit founders and in the service of truth and morality to the Filipino people.

This is a Vuja De moment.

These two pictures, though separated in time, have certain commonalities. XU and SVC are founded by the Jesuits; Both schools have the same motto “Veritas Leberabit Vos”; and two Josefino priests are standing on the left side.

With the presence of Bishop Ver who was formed by the Jesuits, indeed these pictures are very Jesuitic. -Rev. Fr. Nathaniele A. Denlaoso
